Overview

A public web tool that lets Galala University students model their academic standing before results are final. It runs three calculators against the university's own grading scale: projecting the GPA a planned semester would produce, working backwards from a target GPA, and estimating the effect of transfer credits.

The challenge

Students were doing credit-weighted GPA arithmetic in spreadsheets, and the university's repeat-course rule - where a retake replaces the original grade in the calculation - is exactly the part people get wrong. Course-load decisions were being made on numbers that were quietly incorrect.

What we built

Each calculator handles one question a student actually asks, rather than presenting one generic form. The prediction calculator models repeated courses explicitly: tick the repeat box, select the previous grade, and the original is excluded the way the registrar would exclude it. The goal calculator inverts the same maths to answer "what average do I need this semester?" Everything runs in the browser with no account required, and the tool states plainly that it is unofficial and not connected to the student information system.

  • Correct handling of repeated courses and grade replacement
  • Goal calculator that solves for the average required to hit a target
